He had longed to be a church elder, and now his dream had come true. However, he wrongly thought that to be a local church leader implied just selecting the people to accompany the pastor on the podium. How far this man was from being a leader according to God’s own heart! (Jeremiah 3:15). Ministerial Weekly April 13, 2018 “Achieving the Maximum - Reaching out for More!” What Does It Mean for the Elders?” Part Today, I share with you an article by Pastor Josney Rodríguez, Ministerial Director of The Inter-American Division. As the title suggests, it is a charge encouraging pastors and elders to pursue God’s full evangelism potential for His church. “The Board of the Inter-American Division has approved moving forward on the most challenging ministerial and ecclesiastical growth project of the ministerial secretariat which calls for achieving more than has ever been realized until now. It is not a mere program, but a philosophy and vision of leadership that seek to achieve that which has not been attained in every church, district, field and union. Essentially, it is to have the same spirit of Elisha, who asked boldly: ‘Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me’ (2 Kings 2: 9, NKJV). Expanding the Expectation of Leadership! “With this vision of leadership, it is hoped that every leader, pastor, and elder will accept the challenge to experience what has never been realized in their ministry. The desert of doubt and fear, which kept one bound as a leader, will no longer be the experience. So today, can be one of moving forward in order to cross the Jordan River in the name of God accomplishing what has not been witnessed in our congregations. It's time to believe in God! It's time to move forward by faith! It is time to break with routine, insignificance, formalism and show that we trust in a great God who is willing to give us not only a portion of the Spirit, but a double portion. It's time to challenge our faith as the Scripture says that we will receive the blessings of God according to our faith (Matt. 9: 29 ). Therefore, ‘Reaching out for more’ means that I understand that the promise of the Holy Spirit is a reality in those who believe and for which they are willing to be guided by the heavenly power. This is not just words, it's action, it's life. Remember that for the Jordan River to stop we must take the step of faith. Two Great Challenges 1. “Each congregation is challenged to baptize more than one soul each month. The Union, local field and congregation are challenged to move forward in leading more souls to Christ than ever before realized in history. To achieve this purpose, it is expected that, under the direction of elders and pastors, each congregation will baptize one to two souls each month. Accordingly, each congregation will be fulfilling in a special way the mandate of Christ which is to grow the kingdom of God. Also, congregations will be alive and active hopefully accelerating the coming of Christ, while experiencing the spirit of Pentecost, where the Lord added every day those who were to be saved. That is the goal! 2. “Each member is challenged to be transformed into a disciple. The challenge is for each member to be a disciple. It is not just about definitions or written purposes, but about an experience that invites each member to achieve more in his personal life and in service to God. Discipleship calls for each member to participate in a ministry each week and team up with another member in giving Bible studies. Elders Must ‘Achieve More!’ “As a means of equipping for the “Reaching for More” initiative, each elder can expect to receive 20 hours of which 10 hours will be the study of the book: Dream Big – Lead, and Make a Difference . This will enable each elder to practice the principles of leadership in their ministry to achieve reform and revival in their church. Pastors, Ministerial Directors and Field Leaders will facilitate the training. “Additionally, elders can look forward to the second service of recognition and celebration on February16, 2019 to mark their ongoing certification after completion of a minimum of 20 hours for 2018. Consideration will be given to the churches whose elders achieve the following objectives: 1. Pass the ‘Elderly Procedure Guide’ exam score (based on 100 points) 2. Serve as the guardian of a young person between 15 and 30 years old, and be a church elder who has completed this certification. 3. Ensure that 100% of the church is organized according to the plan of Moses. 4. Work with the ‘Feed My Flock’ and ‘Diagnosis and Growth’ forms. 5. Help 51% of the members become involved in discipleship and mission. 6. Help the congregation baptize at least one or two souls each month throughout the year. 7. Put into practice in your church the principles of Dream Big - Lead, and Make a Difference . “It is anticipated that elders will reach their goals by October 30 th this year. Therefore, it is important that you remember the date. Contact your pastor and talk about the plan to reach these goals and be ready to be part of the army of Christ who hopes to achieve more looking to see the glory of God in their ministry. Can God count on you? I am praying deeply for God to use you powerfully to make a difference in your church. I am convinced that God has a great plan with you! “Achieve the maximum – reach out for more!” For more information: http://everyelderinvolved.com/ Send testimonies with photos or videos of what is happening in your church, field and union, at rodriguezjo@interamerica.org Ministerial Weekly is a weekly article for pastors and elders produced by the Ministerial Department of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Inter-American Division / Editor: Pastor Josney Rodríguez, IAD Ministerial Secretary. July 20, 2018 What is an Elder Supposed to Do at Visitation? By Pastor Manuel Luna Atuesta Secretary of the Ministerial Association Eastern Colombia Conference, Northern Colombia Union Conference One of our church members was thrilled because he had been appointed church elder. He had longed to be a church elder, and now his dream had come true. However, he wrongly thought that to be a local church leader implied just selecting the people to accompany the pastor on the podium. How far this man was from being a leader according to God’s own heart! (Jeremiah 3:15). A church elder is a local church leader that, among other things, exerts an informative, formative, and transformative service on behalf of church members. Such Christian leadership is essentially expressed when visiting people and families where they are —at their jobs or homes— providing care according to their needs. It is in the small one-soul auditorium where great spiritual and transformational triumphs for eternity are achieved. Ellen G. White clearly states that “It is not enough to preach to men; we must pray with them and for them; we must not hold ourselves coldly aloof from them but come in sympathy close to the souls we wish to save, visit and converse with them” ( Pastoral Ministry , p. 225). What are We Supposed to Do at Visitation? Every visitation should be carefully planned and have a clearly-stated purpose, which will depend on the specific current situation of the church member or family visited. In every case, whether the visitation results from illness, the death of a relative, or just an interest in the spiritual health ...
